Georgian Traditional Foods

One of the best parts of traveling is trying different traditional and local foods. Georgian food culture is known for its diversity, cooking style and table setting, and meat, vegetables, fruit and fresh fish are always used in these dishes. It is interesting to know that there are more than 150 types of food in Georgia, which are mainly influenced by other Asian food cultures. It is also common to use dairy products with food in Georgia. The food and desserts of this country are very diverse and delicious. Next, I went to one of the famous Georgian restaurants in the city of Batumi so you can get to know some of the best dishes of Georgia.

Lurji Sufra Restaurant

Lorji Sofra restaurant is very different and unique comparing other restaurants in this city. This restaurant has the right to be always busy and crowded, if you have eaten here once, you will want to come back again.

With the best traditional and local dishes of Georgia, local and international breads, famous drinks of this country, this restaurant is ready to welcome guests in its beautiful environment.

This restaurant was more than what I expected. Amazing staffs who are smiling all the times are very welcoming. They all speak English and the menu of this restaurant suits every taste. From traditional Georgian food to seafood at incredible prices. I had tomato and cucumber salad with walnut, plus mushrooms with sulguni cheese, Shkmeruli, Dorado (seafood) and Georgian white wine. They were all nice and high quality.

In the following, you will get to know all these Georgian traditional foods.

Atmosphere

The restaurant has a very different atmosphere, unique architecture, highly engineered use of a simple color spectrum, all of which work hand in hand to host guests in the best way. This is probably the first thing you will be surprised by when entering this restaurant, a beautiful restaurant with an attractive and wonderful menu.

MUST-TRY GEORGIAN DISHES

Georgian Salad with Walnut

You will be hard-pressed to have a meal in Georgia that doesn’t include the classic tomato and cucumber salad. Home to some of the best tomatoes I’ve ever had, Georgia really celebrates these sweet red orbs with one of the most simple and flavourful salads that exist. This salad is compatible with all Georgian dishes; from shkmeruli to khachapuri to satsivi to Megrelian kharcho and more.

And what makes this salad even more versatile is that, like so many dishes in Georgia, there is almost always an option to have it with a delicious walnut dressing! As the adage goes, Georgians will put walnuts in everything except their wine and they certainly don’t stop short of adding walnuts to their salad!

Lurji Sufra Restaurant offers this salad in the best possible way.

Stuffed Georgian Sulguni Cheese Mushrooms

I consider these Sulguni Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms as a gateway “drug” to Georgian cuisine. And that’s saying a lot, because Georgian food is some of the most unique and delicious that we have experienced.

These Sulguni Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms are traditionally baked in shallow round red clay pots, which are called “ketsi.” They are used to make many baked Georgian dishes, such as another personal favorite, Shkmeruli, Chicken Baked in Milk with Garlic.

Shkmeruli

Shkmeruli is a traditional Georgian dish made with fried chicken slowly simmered in a flavorful mixture of milk and garlic until it fully soaks all those beautiful flavors. It’s delicate, tender, and hearty. Also, it’s one of those dishes that are very easy to master even if you don’t have a lot of cooking experience. It’s a one-pot meal and requires very few ingredients.

What makes Shkmerulis different from each other is the cooking method, the more skilled the cook, the better Shkmeruli we will have. That's why I decided to experience my last Shkmeruli in Georgia at Lurji Sufra Restaurant, it was one of my best experiences of this traditional and popular Georgian dish.

Dorado (sea food)

Dorado is a fish from the spar family, which is also called cruciferous carp. For his life, he mainly chooses oceans and tropical seas, where he feels most comfortable. It also bears the name "dolphin" and is rather strange in appearance: it has a flat head, a long fin and a tail that is clearly divided into two parts.

In some countries it is called dolphin fish, but it is more commonly known as dorado. Dorado is a marine fish with relatively dense meat, but at the same time tender and aromatic. Dorado is cooked on the grill, cooked perfectly in the oven, delicious pies with vegetables and olives, and soups are made with it.

Dorado (sea food)

This is the first time I chose to eat this dish in Georgia, especially by the Black Sea, and especially at Lurji Sufra Restaurant. I knew this restaurant must be the best place to experience this unique seafood.

Georgian white wine

Georgia is the oldest wine producing region in the world. The fertile valleys and protective slopes of the South Caucasus were home to grapevine cultivation and neolithic wine production for at least 8000 years. Due to millennia of winemaking and the prominent economic role it retains in Georgia to the present day, wine and viticulture are entwined with Georgia's national identity.

Lurji Sufra Restaurant provides the best quality Georgian wines.
